The two sides was a nice touch because it allows players to either build their borough going down or going up towards the center. Suburbia also comes with a few main boards and a dual sided player board. I also found the artwork to be colorful and thematic, which was a nice touch. With the clever use of colors and symbols players can easily decipher what each tile does and which it affects. Each tile has a lot of information to show and the layout makes it really easy to know what to do when each tile is placed. However, there are a few things included that make the game feel higher quality than your standard tile laying game.įirst, the art and design is really well done in Suburbia. For the most part, that’s what you get in Suburbia. Most of the time you get some well illustrated tiles and maybe a wooden token or two. With a tile laying game, I didn’t have very high expectations for the components in the game. At that point, players collect any bonuses for achieved goals and the player with the most population is the winner. The game ends somewhat randomly once players get near the end of the third stack of building tiles. Expand too quickly and you will be struggling to keep up with your new found demand. Be careful though, as your borough grows, so do the costs to maintain it. These will aid you with more money to buy future tiles or more people (victory points) for your borough. As you build up your borough, you will gain both income and reputation. What you buy matters as much as where you place it as each tile can affect many other ones in the game, possibly creating some powerful combos. Each turn, you will be buying a tile from the real estate market and placing it anywhere in your borough. In Suburbia, your main goal is to build up your borough as efficiently as possible. Game Overview: Every players starts with the same 3 starting tiles in the same spots. Suburbia plays best with any number of players. Suburbia is an economic and tile placement game for 1-4 players. In Suburbia you can run your own city (or at least a portion of it) on your tabletop with no internet connection required (take that EA Games). There was just something so fun about being an urban planner and building up a city from its humble beginnings. What do you think? I've yet to try Suburbia with 3 or 4 people, but I'd be interested to see if increasing the goals by one would improve those games as well. This has improved the tension and strategy of the end-game immensely, and it's much less likely to end in a runaway. And even if we each abandon one goal, there's still a 3rd to fight over. I pay much more attention to her city, because I don't want to fall behind on a goal. We've found that we are much more engaged with jostling for position. With an odd number of goals, it becomes impossible to split the goals (unless you tie for 1 or more, which is interesting in its own right). When playing with 2 players: Use 3 Face-Up Goals. But you're in the lead, so who cares? If the two of you split the face-up goals, you'll win by virtue of your lead. If you're in the lead, you might try to go for both face-up goals, but at what cost? There comes a time about 2/3 of the way through the game when you realize you can score a lot of points if you allow yourself to give up on one of the goals. This almost always ends in a complete wash, making the goals almost pointless. Each of us would make our secret goal, and we would each get one of the face-up goals. In our first several plays, the same thing tended to happen. However, when playing the 2-player game, we felt there was something missing from the end-game scoring. We recently got Suburbia and we're both big fans. About 50% of my gaming is 2-player games with my wife.
